Anal Fistula: What Symptoms Should You Watch For?
An anal fistula is an abnormal tunnel that develops between the anal canal and the skin around the anus. It commonly develops after an anal abscess or infection.
Common Symptoms Include:
- Persistent or throbbing pain around the anus
- Swelling, redness or skin irritation
- Pus, blood or foul-smelling discharge
- A small opening or sore near the anus
- Recurrent painful swelling or abscess
- Fever, especially when an abscess is present
These symptoms can overlap with other anal conditions, so proper medical evaluation is important. Anal fistulas usually do not heal on their own and may require specialist treatment.
